Sufi

For hundreds of millions of Sufi followers worldwide, music is at the heart of their tradition and a way of getting closer to God. From the Whirling Dervishes of Turkey to the qawwali music of Pakistan, Sufism has produced some of the worlds most spectacular music celebrated by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Dalrymples film traces the shared roots of Christianity and Islam in the Middle East and discovers Sufism to be a peaceful, tolerant and pluralistic bastion against fundamentalism.

The Modern Racist Paradigm

This is a well researched documentary (75 mins) that exposes the "White" Media's long-term agenda to standardize Caucasian people as the "social norm" for general society. Through the globalization and centralization of the "White" media and its constant propagation of repetitive images depicting Caucasians in positive roles and as protagonists while usually depicting Non-Caucasians as background characters and antagonists -- which are often connected to negative themes and stereotypes -- the media elite have been able to effectively condition general society into subconsciously adhering to a racist social hierarchy in which Caucasian people are at the very apex. The documentary addresses many modern-day internalized racist psychological dispositions (subconscious forms of internalized racism) which are unknowingly passed down from generation to generation due to the globalization and pervasiveness of "Whiteness"; a cultural assimilation process of which, is directly derivative to historical European expansionism, colonialism, and imperialism. For more detailed research, please go to: http://opposingdigits.com/racistparadigm/ The article in the link above (which has much more information than in the video) also exposes "race" as being nothing more than a social construct. It (the article) exposes the fallacy of "race" and the color labels that are part of it; examples include the terms "Black" and "White", etc., and how those color labels are subconsciously associated with underlying negative and / or positive themes. Note: This video is designed to serve as an introductory presentation to the article itself.

Stelarc - The Body is Obsolete - Contemporary Arts Media

Screener for Stelarc - The Body is Obsolete distributed online worldwide by Contemporary Arts Media (http://www.artfilms.com.au).

DVD & CD-ROM. Stelarc is an Australian artist who has performed extensively in Japan, Europe and the USA - including new music, dance festivals and experimental theatre. He has used medical instruments, prosthetics, robotics, Virtual Reality systems and the Internet to explore alternate, intimate and involuntary interfaces with the body. The DVD and accompanying CD-ROM feature an interview with Stelarc as well as descriptions and images of all his major artworks.

He has acoustically and visually probed the body-having amplified brainwaves, blood-flow and muscle signals and filmed the inside of his lungs, stomach and colon, approximately two metres of internal space. He has done twenty-five body SUSPENSIONS with insertions into the skin, in different positions and varying situations in remote locations. He has performed with a THIRD HAND, a VIRTUAL ARM, a VIRTUAL BODY and a STOMACH SCULPTURE.

For FRACTAL FLESH, as part of Telepolis, he developed a touch-screen interfaced Muscle Stimulation System, enabling remote access, actuation and choreography of the body. Performances such as PING BODY and PARASITE probe notions of telematic scaling and the engineering of external, extended and virtual nervous systems for the body using the Internet. In 1998 for Kampnagel, he completed EXOSKELETON - a pneumatically powered 6-legged walking machine actuated by arm gestures.

Current projects include the EXTRA EAR - a surgically constructed ear as an additional facial feature that coupled with a modem and a wearable computer will act as an internet antenna, able to hear RealAudio sounds. And MOVATAR is an intelligent avatar that performs in the real world by possessing a physical body. It will have a sound feedback loop from the body giving the virtual entity an ear in the world.

In 2000, he completed an EXTENDED ARM - a manipulator with eleven degrees-of-freedom that extends his arm to primate proportions and a MOTION PROSTHESIS - an intelligent, compliant servo-mechanism that enables the performance of precise, repetitive and accelerated prompting or programming of the arms in real-time. In 2002, with the collaboration of the Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems Group, COGs, University of Sussex and TNTU, the HEXAPOD robot prototype was developed.

In 2003 the PROSTHETIC HEAD, an embodied conversational agent that speaks to the person who interrogates it, was completed for New Territories, Glasgow. It was also shown at the ICA in London and Interaccess in Toronto. This was realized with Tissue Culture and Art Project from Perth. The 6-legged MUSCLE MACHINE was constructed with the assistance of The Nottingham Trent University Engineering team, using fluidic rubber muscle actuators. 1/4 scale replicas of the artist's ear have been grown using mouse and human cells. These were exhibited at Galeria Kapelica in Ljubljana and for the Clemenger Contemporary Art Award at Ian Potter, NGV at Federation Square.

In 1995 Stelarc received a three year Fellowship from The Visual Arts/ Craft Board, The Australia Council. In 1997 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Art and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsurgh. He was Artist-In-Residence for Hamburg City in 1998. In 2000 he was awarded an Honorary Degree of Laws by Monash University. He completed an artist-in-residence position in Art and Technology, at the Faculty of Art and Design at Ohio State University in Columbus in March, 2003. He is Principal Research Fellow in the Performance Arts Digital Research Unit at The Nottingham Trent University. UK. His art is represented by the Sherman Galleries in Sydney.

DVD 35mins, CD-ROM Windows/Mac 2005.

Reefer Madness (1936)

Reefer Madness (aka Tell Your Children) is a 1936 exploitation film revolving around the tragic events that ensue when high school students are lured by pushers to try "marihuana": a hit and run accident, manslaughter, suicide, rape, and descent into madness all ensue. The film was directed by Louis Gasnier and starred a cast composed of mostly unknown bit actors. It was originally financed by a church group and made under the title Tell Your Children.

The film was intended to be shown to parents as a morality tale attempting to teach them about the dangers of cannabis use. However, soon after the film was shot, it was purchased by producer Dwain Esper, who re-cut the film for distribution on the exploitation film circuit. The film never gained an audience until it was rediscovered in the 1970s and gained new life as a piece of unintentional comedy among cannabis smokers. Today, it is in the public domain in the United States and is considered a cult film. It inspired a musical satire, which premiered off-Broadway in 2001, and a Showtime film, Reefer Madness, based on the musical.

Brightblack Morning Light Soundcheck 1

Brightblack Morning Light (formerly Brightblack) is a band based in New Mexico, specializing in permutations of folk rock and psychedelic music. The group is based around the core duo of Rachael Hughes and Nathan Shineywater.
The band was the subject of some criticism regarding the tour rider for its March 7, 2007 concert at Club Congress, a venue in Tucson, Arizona. The tour rider included the following condition: "No U.S. Military entities in any form allowed within the event." The publication of the tour rider on a music blog provoked an "online uproar". Matador Records later apologized for the "miscommunication" and clarified that the band did not want military recruiters on site

2020 report on music video from 1980

Back in 1980, the record industry was in turmoil - a place they seem to find themselves in on a regular basis. Featuring interviews with various record label executives on whether or not this new thing called "music video" would save the record business.

This pre-dated eMpTyVee, which didn't launch until August 1st, 1981.

Featuring clips from various artists including:

Kate Bush
Lene Lovich
Todd Rundgren
The Rolling Stones
Michael Nesmith
Rickie Lee Jones
Tom Petty
Fleetwood Mac
The Buggles
Meatloaf
Bruce Springsteen

It's amusing (although unintentionally so), and the hosts of the program really don't seem to grasp the relationship of music and video. And people under 20 might find those giant DVDs somewhat disturbing.

Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba - Ngoni Fola

Bassekou Kouyate is a genuis. He plays an earthy form of spiritual blues that has such a purity to it that listening to it makes one shudder, physically react to the sounds he makes. It is amazing.

He was born in Garana, Barouéli Cercle, 60 kilometres from Ségou in 1966. At the age of 12, he started playing Ngoni instrument. In the late 80's he moved to capital Bamako.

Kurt Cobain About a Son (2007)

Kurt Cobain About a Son — an intimate and moving meditation on the late musician and artist Kurt Cobain, based on more than 25 hours of previously unheard audiotaped interviews conducted with Cobain by noted music journalist Michael Azerrad for his book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana. In the film, Cobain recounts his own life — from his childhood and adolescence to his days of musical discovery and later dealings with explosive fame — and offers often piercing insights into his life, music, and times. The conversations heard in the film have never before been made public and they reveal a highly personal portrait of an artist much discussed but not particularly well understood.

Chasing a Bee

Its 1993 and I have just quit my job and am moving to Sydney (Australia)..actually about 1000kms from where I was living and had grown up. The soundtrack to this move across a large part of the eastern Australian coast is, among many others, Mercury Rev's 1991 masterpiece 'Yerself Is Steam'. I just found the video on the net for Chasing a Bee, which I had never seen before. The record I have not listened to for about 10 years. I remember it as mighty fine. Chasing a Bee (above) I remember listening to often. (god I'm getting old...I sound like a war veteran..I remember..blah blah)
